6 ADVERSE REACTIONS

Several compounds, vying for the title of “the little pink pill”, are in different stages of development and some of them may hit the market as soon as this year. In our previous post, we discussed what every woman needs to know about “the little pink pill”. Here’s what every man needs to know. In 2013, New York Times suggested that up to 30% of otherwise healthy women between the ages of 20 and 60 are affected.

2.1 Dosage Information

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (4 questions, 28 members) Since 1998, when “the little blue pill” called Viagra created a revolution in treating male sexual dysfunction, expectations have been high that “the little pink pill” – an equally powerful medication to help women — will follow soon. The task, however, has proven to be more difficult than originally expected – as of now, not a single compound has been officially approved to treat sexual dysfunction in women. Taking Addyi at a time other than bedtime can increase your risk of low blood pressure, fainting (loss of consciousness), accidental injury, and sleepiness. A Boxed Warning regarding combining alcohol and Addyi use is outlined in the prescribing information and Medication Guide for the drug. A Boxed Warning is the FDA's most stringent safety warning. There are also Boxed Warnings regarding use in liver impairment (liver disease) and for certain drug interactions, as explained below. Combining Addyi with alcohol may increase the risk of low blood pressure and fainting (loss of consciousness), which is problematic especially if you are driving, doing hazardous activities, or need clear thinking or reaction times.

More common

Women should discontinue drinking alcohol at least two hours before taking Addyi at bedtime (if they've had 1 or 2 standard alcoholic drinks that night), OR Skip the Addyi dose that evening if they have had 3 or more standard alcoholic drinks that night. If you skip a dose of Addyi, take your next dose at bedtime the next day. After taking Addyi at bedtime, do not use alcohol until the following day. Do not consume alcohol at least until the morning after taking Addyi at bedtime. One standard alcoholic drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol and is equivalent to one 12-ounce regular beer, 5-ounces wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits or shot. Even at the lower end of the range, it is likely that well over ten million women in the USA alone experience HSDD.

13.1 Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility

If you take Addyi and feel dizzy or lightheaded, lie down right away if you feel like you could faint. Get emergency help or ask someone else to do this. If you faint, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do things that require clear thinking until at least 6 hours after you take Addyi and until you know how this medicine affects you. Physiology and psychology of female desire is an exceptionally complex interplay of hormones and neurochemicals. Anecdotally, some participants in studies conducted at Boston Clinical Trials and other research centers reported dramatic improvement in their sexual appetites. Yet other participants experienced limited or no change. It is important to keep in mind that the studies were double-blinded, i.e., neither the patient, nor the staff members knew whether the person received an investigational drug or a placebo. 2.3 Dosage Adjustments in Specific Situations

Taking these drugs together can increase the blood levels of Addyi in your body and could increase your risk of low blood pressure, sleepiness or fainting (loss of consciousness). John’s Wort, ginkgo, or resveratrol Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines such as cimetidine (Tagamet HB) Do not drink grapefruit juice if you take Addyi because this may also increase your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting (loss of consciousness). Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take, including prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamin or herbal supplements. Do not take or start taking any medicines while taking Addyi until you have talked with your doctor. In 2014, FDA identified HSDD as one of 20 disease areas of high priority. Given the FDA focus and the promise of a multibillion market, there is little doubt that the treatment for HSDD will become a reality soon.
